Search Engine Definition

Search Engine

Looking for information online? To find it, you probably use a search engine.

This is a website where you type in words or phrases related to the information you’re looking for and the site provides you with a list of websites, videos, images and other information related to the words you typed.

Search engines collect, index and organize information from around the Internet. When you type in your keyword or phrase (called a search query), the search engine’s algorithm finds the websites, images, videos and other information most closely related to your search query and displays them to you in a hierarchical ranking.

The main search engines are Google, Yahoo! and Bing. However, there are hundreds of other, smaller search engines available.
