Google AdWords Definition

Google AdWords

Google AdWords is Google’s paid advertising program and the source of most of the company’s revenues.

The primary benefit of AdWords for advertisers is that you can target your prospects based on the search terms they’re typing into Google (ie. they are actively looking for the products and services you offer) and you only pay when a searcher clicks on your ads and visits your website. Because you only pay when someone clicks on your ads, AdWords is often known as pay per click advertising.

AdWords ads appear on Google.com both above the organic search results as well as down the right side of the search results screen (the AdWords ads are in the red boxes in the image below).

You can also choose to run ads on Google’s Display Network which is a network of websites including the New York Times website, Gmail, YouTube and many more. The Display Network reaches 80% of global internet users. Advertisers using the Display Network can run text ads as well as image (banner) ads and video ads.
